New to the Industry? FAQs:

No. However, these courses meet the classroom training required by DPS to become licensed in the State of Texas.

Yes. If you are performing security duties for compensation in Texas, you must register/license through DPS’s Private Security Program. Working without the proper license is a violation of state law.

Some of the key requirements include:
    •    Being at least 18 years old.
    •    Legal authorization to work in the U.S.
    •    Submitting to fingerprinting and a criminal background check.
    •    Completing the appropriate training for the level you’re seeking.

In Texas the main levels are:

  • Level II (Non-Commissioned Security Officer): Unarmed security guards. Requires “Level II” training.
  • Level III (Commissioned Security Officer): Armed security guards. Requires more extensive training (including firearms proficiency) and the “Level III” course.
  • Level IV (Personal Protection Officer / Bodyguard): Specialized protective services with advanced training.

The general process is:

  • Secure employment or sponsorship by a licensed security company (for many levels).
  • Complete required training for your level (and pass any tests / firearms qualification if applicable).
  • Submit your application through the DPS online portal (TOPS) including training certificate, fingerprints, and payment of fees.
  • Wait for DPS to process; once approved you receive your “pocket card” license.

  • These licenses are valid for two years in many cases.
  • For armed or Level III officers: you must complete continuing education (for example 6 hours) and demonstrate firearms proficiency to renew.
  • It’s important to renew before expiration to stay in compliance.
